ALDEN HOUSE — MAYFLOWER CEMETERY

America's Oldest Maintained Cemetery

Myles Standish Burying Ground is the oldest maintained cemetery in the United States. This sacred ground has been cared for by the town of Duxbury, Massachusetts and takes its name from Myles Standish, military leader of the Plymouth colony, who was interred here in October 1656.

Plaque dedicated in August 1912 as a Bicentennial gift to the nation by the American Cemetery Association

Although the exact grave sites for John and Priscilla are not known, these markers have been erected to their memory. Click on the pictures for a larger view.

Burial Hill, Plymouth

These are copies of  postcards showing the Old Burial Ground in Plymouth, MA. This site is one of the first forts of the Pilgrims and the burial place of William Bradford and other first settlers. Set high a top of the hill, the Pilgrims placed their cannons facing the harbor for the protection.
